Ten apps, one operating system

What it does

Ten apps, each one a single 3-D object you live inside. No dashboard, no grid of cards, no weather-app minimalism — one object, one hue, one job. A shared ledger called CHARGE runs underneath all of them, so effort spent in one app is visible in the others.

Eight apps feed a world. One is the world. One stands outside the game entirely.

The line

!SLAB Phone lock Put it down. It stays down.
!CODEX School — IB DP1 One tower. Six floors. They rot if you don’t show up.
!SCROLL Doomscroll, skill-maxed A feed that owes you something back.
!FORGE Work A machine that stops exactly where you’re stuck.
!IRON Gym, football, diet A cabinet of everything your body has done.
!TEMPLE Mind & wellness A room that falls apart when you do.
!EMPIRE Focus, as Civ The rest of your life, played as a civilisation.
!ATLAS Real world The world, greyed out until you go there.
!ORBIT Notes & ideas Say it once. It finds its own place.
!DOOM Off-grid survival The app you hope never to open.

The economy

CHARGE is energy — the raw ability to act. Every app multiplies it into a specific resource, so no app is decoration. Study rate drives the tech you can reach. Ground you have stood on is ground you can claim. Shipped work becomes gold and infrastructure. Skip the gym for a month and your civilisation is physically weaker.

!DOOM is the exception: no CHARGE in, no CHARGE out, no streak. Every other app pays you for showing up, and that logic is exactly wrong for a survival cache — you do not want a system nudging you to rehearse the apocalypse for points.

What makes it a ! app

One object, no dashboard. The home screen is the object. If it needs a chart next to it to make sense, the object is wrong.

The object is the data. Volume lifted is mass. Focus is height. Study is a floor filling with people. Nothing is a progress bar wearing a costume.

Decay is the default. Towers collapse, floors rot, cities ruin. Standing still is visibly losing — that is the whole series in one rule.

The app does the logging. Repo watched, session spoken, band worn, route walked. If a feature needs you to fill in a form, it is not finished.

Weight beats motion. Things fall, settle, resist. Easing for its own sake is the fastest way to look like a template.

Three numbers, maximum. Monospaced, tabular. Everything else is geometry.

Build order

The sequence is set by a real calendar rather than by which app is most fun. !SLAB first — the smallest surface and the hardest hook to fake, which makes it the honest test of whether the physicality works at all. Then !CODEX, which has the only genuine deadline attached to it. !EMPIRE comes late and stays firewalled: it is a game, not an app, and if it slips a year the other nine must still be worth using alone.

Open questions

CHARGE has no exchange rate yet. The economy says what each app feeds; it does not say how much. An hour of study against an hour of training against one proved skill — those numbers decide whether the whole thing feels fair or gameable.

Where it went

!APPS is shelved. This is the write-up as it stood when I put it up on 31 August 2026.

!APPS written up

Ten apps and a shared ledger called CHARGE.

The whole series went on the first version of this site: ten apps, one object each, and CHARGE underneath them all.
